The annual competition, sponsored by 3M ESPE Preventive Care, recognizes practices that are at the forefront of designing and implementing practical preventive techniques and providing oral healthcare outreach and patient education.

Dr. Mattson, who operates the Rock Run Dental office in Roy, UT, said he targets biofilm and inflammation in his preventive care program.

"If we can get rid of biofilm, the inflammation goes away and the host-mediated responses will then go away, resulting in less bone loss and rescission," he said after receiving the award from John Stefanick, director of industry and professional relations for 3M ESPE dental products. "If we can get patients educated and engaged in the defense of their own oral health, the program works."
