Q: Have you tried SonicFill? What do you think of it?

A: I had the pleasure of trying the SonicFill system (Kerr Dental) during its development, and now I use it daily in my practice.

SonicFill is a sonic-activated, bulk fill dental composite system for posterior restorations that requires no additional capping layer. Proprietary sonic activation enables a rapid flow of composite into the cavity for effortless placement and superior adaptation. It's that fast, easy, and effective -- greatly reducing procedure time. Now you can go from placement to a polished restoration in less than three minutes on cavities up to 5 mm in depth.

SonicFill is a project that combined the knowledge base from Kerr and KaVo Dental. The handpiece allows for very quick and efficient placement of composite in all types of preparations.

The unique SonicFill composite material contains a proprietary rheological modifier that reacts to sonic energy from the handpiece and causes the viscosity to drop almost 90% during extrusion. This viscosity drop allows the SonicFill composite to rapidly flow into the cavity, providing effortless placement and superior adaptation. SonicFill places precisely and efficiently without bubbles or voids.

When the sonic energy is removed, the composite quickly returns to a nonslumping, sculptable state that is easy to handle and carve without being sticky.

So how easy is it to place a SonicFill restoration? Simply place a single increment of composite, contour, cure for 20 seconds from the occlusal, 10 seconds from the buccal and lingual, and polish. It is fast and efficient, which makes it more profitable. No more incremental curing or having to cap your current bulk fill material. SonicFill accomplishes this with good strength, low shrinkage, and high depth of cure. I have even used it for core buildups.

Here is a SonicFill restoration. This entire preparation was filled in a single increment, light-cured, and polished.

I have had no incidences of sensitivity and can easily say that I am thoroughly impressed with the SonicFill system.
