Atlanta to get orthodontic residency program in 2016

The Georgia School of Orthodontics (GSO) plans to open an orthodontic residency program in Atlanta in 2016.

The school will offer an advanced specialty education program in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. A flagship location in Sandy Springs, GA, will serve as the program's home, and the school will open a number of community clinics in underserved areas beginning in 2017. The residency program is structured to provide a collaborative and evidence-based learning environment, while also providing orthodontic care to patients in the school's clinics.

"Along with meeting the critical needs of the underserved population in Georgia, GSO is investing in being part of the solution to the state lagging behind the national average for minority orthodontic students and graduates by offering generous scholarships for qualified underrepresented minority residents," stated Pramod Sinha, DDS, GSO's program director, in a press release.

GSO anticipates its first class of residents in September 2016 and will begin to serve patients in April 2016 for about half the cost of private practice orthodontic care. Residency applications are now being accepting on a rolling basis, and GSO will enroll residents pending accreditation through the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
