3M restoratives get high marks from Dental Advisor

The 3M ESPE Z100 Restorative and 3M ESPE Filtek Z250 Universal Restorative have received the highest possible clinical rating -- excellent -- from Dental Advisor, according to 3M.

The Z100, a light-cured composite with zirconia filler particles, was reviewed at 15 years and given a 96% clinical rating. Nearly 130 restorations that were placed in 1992-1993 were recently recalled and evaluated. After 15 years, more than 80% of restorations exhibited no fracture or chipping, and while less than 20% showed some minor chipping, none of the restorations had required replacement. Additionally, very little shade change took place over the 15-year period, with more than 70% exhibiting excellent shade match.

The Filtek Z250, a direct universal composite for anterior and posterior use, was reviewed at nine years. More than 560 restorations were recalled and evaluated. Results showed that almost 95% of restorations showed no chips or fractures. Additionally, 98% were rated very good to excellent in terms of aesthetics, with restorations remaining smooth with stable color. Nearly 90% of the restorations possessed no marginal discoloration at recall.

Ratings from Dental Advisor were given in the clinical categories of resistance to fracture, aesthetics, wear resistance, and resistance to marginal discoloration.
