Nova Southeastern gets $438K grant for special needs patients

The Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine has received a two-year, $437,616 grant from the DentaQuest Foundation to train Florida dentists to provide care for patients with special needs.

The grant will be used to develop a comprehensive skills-building program for dentists, according to the university.

The goal of the program is to increase the number of dentists who have the knowledge and confidence to provide quality care to patients with challenging physical, medical, and behavioral needs. This includes individuals with acquired and developmental disabilities, as well as those who have special challenges such as physical movement or communication difficulties.

Training for the dentists is provided by Nova Southeastern assistant professors Carrigan Pick, DMD, and Steven Ellen, DDS, who have more than 40 years of experience treating the developmentally disabled, according to the university.
