NY dentist who beat fraud charges opposes Spitzer as controller

A New York dentist who says his career was ruined by Medicaid fraud charges filed by former state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer says Spitzer shouldn't be elected city controller.

After Leonard Morse, DDS, was found not guilty in a Medicare fraud case brought by Spitzer, he filed a federal lawsuit claiming false arrest and malicious prosecution. He was subsequently awarded $7.7 million in February of this year.

Dr. Morse is cautioning those who are considering voting for Spitzer, who is running to be New York City's controller, saying Spitzer isn't reformed, according to a New York Daily News story. Dr. Morse warned that Spitzer has a "dark side."

Dr. Morse said he lost his multimillion-dollar practice in Brooklyn, his hospital teaching job, and his Great Neck, Long Island, home in the wake of the fraud charges.

Dr. Morse's $7.7 million verdict was $1.6 million more than an expert estimated the dentist had lost. The state is appealing.

Spitzer denied involvement in handling Dr. Morse's case, and the judge handling the dentist's lawsuit dismissed Spitzer as a defendant.
