Ohio considers adding dental school

Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) in Rootstown is considering adding a dental school.

It would be the state's third dental school, along with the Ohio State University College of Dentistry and the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, according to a crainscleveland.com story.

NEOMED is doing a feasibility study to determine if the program makes sense for the community and would be financially sustainable. The university plans to present the study this summer to school trustees, who will then recommend to NEOMED President Jay Gershen, DDS, PhD, whether the university should move forward with the effort, according to the story.

NEOMED historically has been a regional medical school but has expanded its offerings, including opening a new College of Pharmacy in 2007. Currently, Case Western Reserve University houses Northeast Ohio's only dental school; about 400 students enrolled in its School of Dental Medicine last fall.
