NYU launches 17-month AAS degree program in dental hygiene

The New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD) will offer an accelerated 17-month, Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree program in dental hygiene in 2015.

The fast-track AAS degree program is designed for highly motivated students to gain access to the same quality education as that offered by the traditional two- to three-year course of study but in a more concentrated period, according to the university.

The 78-credit curriculum is offered as a 17-month program, a two- or three-year day program, or a three-year evening program.

NYU offers the only dental hygiene programs housed within a dental college in New York state. Fast-track students have the opportunity to learn in integrated clinical settings alongside NYU dental students, as well as with NYU faculty members from dental hygiene, dentistry, and dental specialty areas in state-of-the-art facilities. Community-based rotations enable students to gain clinical experience.

Program graduates are qualified to take the clinical board examinations and the dental hygiene national boards, requirements for state licensure. The fast-track dental hygiene program is fully accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation for Dental Hygiene Education Programs.

Classes start in January 2015 and the application deadline is November 1, 2014. Information is available at the dental school's website.

NYUCD is the third oldest and the largest dental school in the U.S., educating more than 8% of all dentists, according to the university.
