Oregon considers dental insurance cuts

Earlier this month, the Oregon Legislature voted to add 115,000 adults and children to the Oregon Health Plan, but it is now considering cuts to vision and dental services to adults currently on the plan, potentially saving $8.9 million and affecting about 175,000 adults, according to a story by the Oregonian.
The Ways and Means Subcommittee on Human Services last week approved Senate Bill 5529, a 2009-2011 budget bill for the Department of Human Services. While the bill would allow the health plan to continue to cover preventive dental care, fillings, and partial dentures, it would no longer cover most advanced dental restorative services for all adults on the plan except pregnant women.
The bill is now being considered by the full Ways and Means Committee, according to the paper.

The cuts to dental insurance coverage will undoubtedly have a negative impact on the dental health of people in Oregon. This will lead to less visits to the dentist and more dental problems which will become more costly to treat down the road. |
