NIDCR awards $24M to study tissue regeneration

The National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) has pledged $24 million to support the development of two resource centers that will study tissue regeneration.

One team of researchers from California and another from Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts will each receive $12 million over three years to fund the creation of research centers that focus on therapies to repair or regenerate tissues in the mouth, face, and head.

Jeffrey Lotz, PhD, from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) will lead the California team, which also includes researchers from five other prominent schools in the state. David H. Kohn, PhD, from the University of Michigan will lead the other team, which includes researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University.

The two centers are part of the NIDCR's Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Tissue Regeneration Consortium, a three-stage plan with the ultimate goal of creating strategies and devices to repair tissues that have been damaged by disease or injury.
