Biolase Q2 revenues up 17%

Biolase is crediting strong sales of its core laser and digital imaging systems for a 17% increase in sales for the second quarter of 2013 (end-June 30).

Biolase reported net revenue of $14.2 million for the quarter, compared with $12.2 million in the same quarter last year.

Laser system net revenue increased by approximately $1.3 million, or 16%, for the quarter compared with the same period last year, the company noted in a press release.Imaging revenues, which included both cone-beam CT and CAD/CAM, increased $456,000, or 50%, compared with the same period last year.

However, Biolase reported a net loss of $2.6 million for the quarter, compared with a net loss of $1.9 million for the second quarter of 2012.

The quarter-over-quarter decrease was primarily due to an unusually slow quarter end for the company's domestic laser sales, Germany not performing as expected, a delay in U.S. deliveries of the latest CAD/CAM system model from their European vendor, and problems that hurt sales in Canada, according to Federico Pignatelli, chairman and CEO.

Severe flooding in June in parts of Canada also impeded sales, and Biolase did not receive approval from Health Canada for their product EPIC 10, which was anticipated in the second quarter, he added.
