IOS FastScan shows promise in beta testing

The IOS FastScan intraoral digital scanner has been advanced from prototype to production version and is now undergoing clinical beta testing, according to Glidewell Laboratories and IOS Technologies.

"This initial testing has delivered promising consistency for a variety of dental applications, most notably with model-free CAD/CAM manufacture of BruxZir solid zirconia crowns and bridges," the companies said in a press release.

The main advantage of the IOS FastScan over competing systems is its intuitive wand, according to Michael DiTolla, director of clinical education and research at Glidewell.

"The IOS FastScan is the only system in which you hold the wand still while the camera moves within the wand," he said. "As the camera moves across its 40-mm path, you are not able to feel it moving. This single capture is equal to four or five still frames taken with other intraoral scanning systems."

A video preview of the new production version of the IOS FastScan Intraoral Scanner is available on both companies' websites.
