Group raises $625K for Canadian cancer center

Supporters of the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto recently raised more than $625,000 to help the hospital's head and neck cancer team.

More than 320 participants swam, ran, and biked during the Joe's Team triathlon/duathlon to raise money for the cancer center, according to a muskokaregion.com story.

The idea for the event came from the efforts of Joe Finley, who was diagnosed with nasal pharyngeal cancer. In 2005, Finley discovered the cancer had spread to his lungs. Despite the physical toll of his treatment, he fulfilled a lifelong goal in 2006 when he completed his first triathlon. Finley died in 2010. The Joe Finley Centre for Head and Neck Cancer Research opened in March.

To date, Joe's Team has raised more than $10 million, helping the head and neck cancer team at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre to grow from four to more than 80 clinicians and researchers.
