European dental implant market to hit $2B by 2015

The European market for dental implants will show significant growth to $2 billion by 2015, and large variations between dental implant markets in various countries will have significant effects on the business strategies of dental implant companies, according to a new report from Millennium Research Group.

The fragile economies of Spain and Italy have affected their dental implant markets, Millennium noted. Due to reduced procedure volumes, Spain's dental implant market will continue to shrink during the next year. Italy is currently the second-largest European market for dental implants, but the downward pressure on prices will make it difficult for companies to increase revenues, according to the company.

France and the U.K. are relatively underpenetrated despite their comparatively robust economies, according to the report. Increasing patient awareness and dentists' willingness to adopt dental implant treatments will lead to growth rates of about 8% annually in both countries, nearly double the overall European market average.

"Growth in dental implants will be strongest in Eastern Europe," stated Carmen Chan, an analyst with Millennium, in a press release. "The relatively low cost of procedures allows these dental implant markets to benefit from dental tourism from Germany, the United Kingdom, and France. While there are some concerns about postprocedure complications -- which require the patient to return for follow-up treatments -- Eastern European governments and dental organizations are nevertheless working to promote this type of business."

By the end of 2015, dental implant fixture units sold in Eastern Europe will equal those sold in the Benelux region and represent more than 5% of all revenues in the European dental implant market, according to Millennium.

The "European Markets for Dental Implants 2011" report includes procedure, unit, average selling price, and revenue information, along with market drivers and limiters and the competitive landscape for dental implant fixtures, final abutments, and other tools.
