Civil suits filed against dentist acquitted of sexual assault

A Pennsylvania oral surgeon who was acquitted earlier this year of molesting 17 female patients under anesthesia has been sued by four of those women, according to an Associated Press story.

Two women filed lawsuits in August and two more filed them on Monday, according to the story.

Robert Boyda Jr., D.D.S., was charged in January 2008 with several counts of assault, including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, deviant sexual intercourse, indecent assault, indecent exposure, and corruption of minors.

Allegheny County Judge Anthony Mariani, who presided over the nonjury trial, acquitted Dr. Boyda in July after expert testimony that some of the drugs given to the patients can cause hallucinations, vivid dreams, and sexual fantasies.

Judge Mariani said he was astounded that the patients had not been warned about the possible side effects of these drugs, adding that his verdict might have been different if this had been a civil case instead of a criminal one.

Dr. Boyda's lawyer said the lawsuits are an attempt to extort money, according to the story.
