New Zealand has passed an anti-smoking bill that will ban the sale of tobacco to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, according to a report published December 13 on CNN.com.

The Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Amendment Bill is part of New Zealand's efforts to be smoke-free by 2025, the report said. It will cut the number of retailers licensed to sell tobacco from 6,000 to 600 by 2023 and will reduce the amount of nicotine allowed in tobacco products. Violations of the law will incur fines of up to $150,000 New Zealand dollars ($96,000 U.S.), according to CNN.
