Biolase patents new technology

Want a laser that lets you view your skills at vaporizing tissue? What if the same laser picked its own fiber tips? Biolase Technology, Inc. has been granted two new U.S. patents that allow its Waterlase MD all-tissue laser system to do just that.

"These patents cover important capabilities that we are eager to integrate into our existing designs," Biolase's interim CEO Federico Pignatelli said in a press release.

The first patent allows the dentist to ablate and view tissue simultaneously via a camera integrated into the handpiece. The second patent allows adaptors to automatically detect different types of fiber tips appropriate for different procedures, eliminating the need for input from the dentist.

Ioana Rizoiu, VP of Clinical Research added, "The broad claim...within these new patents will allow Biolase to further develop our Waterlase MD platform technology into a multifunctional design that allows tissue removal while simultaneously receiving electromagnetic feedback and visualization of the target tissue."
