Two presentations from the 2016 Connecticut State Dental Association (CSDA) annual meeting are now available as continuing education (CE) videos. Topics include opioid misuse and the HIV care continuum, and other CSDA presentations from previous years are also available.

Robert Zavoski, MD, MPH
Combating a national epidemic of opiate misuse: All docs on deck

Misuse of prescription pain medications is now the leading cause of injury and poisoning deaths in the U.S. The excessive purchase costs of these medications force many users to seek less expensive opiates for their habits, resulting in a rapid expansion of heroin usage affecting all facets of American society. Dr. Zavoski discusses the role of dentists in preventing the misuse of prescription pain medications, how current insurance rules may promote misprescribing of these medications, and what resources are available to clinicians for identifying and addressing opiate addiction.

The collaboration of dental and medical providers for linkage, adherence, and retention in care

The HIV care continuum (AIDS cascade) is used as a guide to define the HIV epidemic. It is also highlighted in the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (August 2015) to set goals to improve the health status of persons living with HIV/AIDS. Bednarsh explains where the oral healthcare team can assist in diagnosis, the linkage between medical and oral health, adherence to medical and dental treatment, and retention in care.
