November 3, 2017 -- A federal grand jury in Pennsylvania has indicted a Pittsburgh dentist on 200 counts of unlawful distribution of controlled substances, healthcare fraud, using or maintaining a drug-involved premises, and other charges, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Daniel Garner, DMD, 45, allegedly distributed hydrocodone and/or oxycodone (classified as schedule II and III controlled substances by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency), on 196 occasions outside of the usual course of professional practice. The indictment also alleges that he committed healthcare fraud over more than five years, from February 2010 through August 2015.
Garner's dental license was suspended in 2016. If convicted and given the maximum total sentence on all counts, Garner could face almost 4,000 years in jail and fines of up to $200 million, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
