June 15, 2012 -- Nasseo, a medical device start-up with new technology to treat dental and orthopedic implant failures, has won first prize in the sixth annual University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Entrepreneur Challenge competition.

The company will receive $57,000 in cash and services, according to the university.

Nasseo's first product is a dental implant that utilizes a proprietary surface modification technology to provide a significantly stronger bone-to-implant bonding. The technology was primarily developed in the lab of Dr. Sungho Jin, chair of the materials science program at UCSD.

Nasseo is led by Garrett Cale Smith, PhD, co-founder and CEO, who received his doctorate in bioengineering from UCSD and is a Stanford University Biodesign Innovation Fellow alumnus, and Kayvon Pourmirzaie, co-founder and chief operating officer, a UCSD bioengineering and University of San Diego School of Law graduate.
