Do's and don'ts for running a dental practice: Be a dentist and a CEO

By Roger P. Levin, DDS

April 27, 2020 -- To succeed in the new dental economy, you need more than clinical skills. You also need to know how to manage a team and run your business efficiently. To get your business to the next level, search for tested, trusted methodologies you can use.

Do

Create a business culture. Your practice is a business. Communicate this concept to your team. Help them understand that your goal as a practice is not only to provide excellent dental care to patients but also to do it in a cost-effective, efficient, and professional manner. Succeeding in today's highly competitive dental economy requires a more business-savvy team than in previous years.

Don

Don't forget to make business learning a priority. As a dentist, you continually learn and sharpen your clinical skills so that you can always provide the best possible care for patients. As the practice CEO, you need to take a similar approach to the business side of your practice. Learn as much about the business of dentistry as possible through articles, courses, and seminars. In the new, more challenging dental economy, the term continuing education has a broader meaning than ever before.
