U.S. Senate confirms new FDA commissioner

May 10, 2017 -- The U.S. Senate confirmed Scott Gottlieb, MD, as the new commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on May 9.

Dr. Gottlieb served as the deputy commissioner to the FDA under former President George W. Bush's administration. He has also served as a health policy expert and venture capitalist.

While many are confident Dr. Gottlieb's expertise will help him effectively lead the organization, critics are concerned about his industry ties. Dr. Gottlieb said he will divest in a couple dozen healthcare stocks and recuse himself from matters involving companies he has worked with, according to articles by Reuters and Stat News.
