January 31, 2018 -- The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has resigned because of reported financial conflicts of interest.

Brenda Fitzgerald, MD, resigned on January 31. Dr. Fitzgerald owned stocks in tobacco, alcohol, healthcare, and soda companies when appointed in July 2017, according to an Associated Press report. As she was unable to divest these holdings and faced recusing herself from many of her duties, she resigned, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

No immediate successor was named in the HHS statement.
