The German Research Foundation has pledged to fund InterDent for the three years. In that time, the foundation will work to develop more effective dental materials that can withstand repeated stress.

The group was established by a team from Charité - University Medicine Berlin and Technical University Berlin to address the failure of dental restoration materials, such as ceramics, alloys, and composites. InterDent partners also includes energy materials research center Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces.

"The purpose of this interdisciplinary collaboration is to identify key parameters which can be used to predict the risk of [materials] degradation and which are capable of implementation into clinical practice," Charité spokesperson Dr. Paul Zaslansky, PhD, stated in a press release.
