The National Cancer Institute awarded the five-year grant to a group led by Anant Madabhushi, PhD, the Donnell Institute Professor of Biomedical Engineering at CWRU and head of the Center for Computational Imaging and Personalized Diagnostics, and Dr. James Lewis Jr., a pathology, microbiology, and immunology professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
The group will use advanced computer vision and machine-learning techniques to identify cancer and immune cells on digitized images of oral squamous cell carcinoma tissue slides and then recognize spatial patterns among those cells. The aim is for the algorithms to help oncologists and pathologists better determine which cancers are more aggressive, aiding their ability to determine whether patients need chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery.
The researchers will work with these other institutions:
- Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals in Cleveland
- San Francisco Veterans Affairs (VA) Health System
- Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai, India
