Calif. dentist charged with $340K in insurance fraud

A Beverly Hills, CA, dentist and his office manager have been arrested for fraudulently billing medical and car insurance companies for more than $339,000.

Tom Kalili, DMD, and office manager Claudia Ventura were arrested on multiple felony counts for insurance fraud, grand theft and tax evasion, according to a press release from the California Department of Insurance.

If convicted, Dr. Kalili faces up to 50 years and Ventura faces up to seven years in state prison.

According to the department of insurance, Dr. Kalili, who operated the Beverly Hills Medical Suite, directed Ventura to submit fraudulent billing statements to four insurers for $339,799.99. The agency's investigation revealed that Dr. Kalili submitted billing for services not performed, including emergency dental procedures. Dr. Kalili also submitted false medical reports in support of fraudulent billing, including fictitious injuries.

The investigation also revealed that Dr. Kalili submitted two fraudulent insurance claims on behalf of himself and his son to two automobile insurers. These claims included medical reports alleging he received treatment in several auto accidents for him and his son.
