Lyndon Cooper named dean of VCU School of Dentistry

Dr. Lyndon Cooper, PhD, has been named dean of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry in Richmond, effective April 18.

Cooper, a clinical prosthodontist, currently serves as associate dean for research and head of the department of oral biology at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) College of Dentistry. At UIC, Cooper expanded research in regenerative sciences, innovative biomedical devices, and translational studies evaluating the roles of a variety of biomarkers linked to cancer, according to VCU. He also established the UIC Clinical Research Center.

Cooper received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from New York University and Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Rochester, as well as a certificate in prosthodontics from Eastman Dental Center in Rochester. He completed a two-year research fellowship at the U.S. National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

Dr. Clara Spatafore, who has served as interim dean since February 2021, will continue in the role until Cooper joins VCU.
