Q: I am interested in incorporating the Nomad handheld x-ray unit into my office and would like to do some outreach dentistry with it. Is this practical?

A: The Aribex Nomad handheld portable x-ray unit is an excellent device for acquiring radiographs. We currently have two of them in my office. The staff readily adapted to the Nomad, and it became the preferred x-ray unit to use even if a wall-mounted unit was available.

If you are in need of a new x-ray unit, you should consider purchasing a Nomad unit. One Nomad can easily replace two or three wall-mounted units.

In addition, as your experience with Nomad grows, there is a greater tendency to go out into the local community and beyond to serve difficult-to-reach patients. According to Ken Kaufman, chief financial officer of Aribex, the company is doing a study on this phenomenon.

"We have found that dentists are often hesitant to engage in access-to-care efforts when they're not equipped with x-ray capabilities," he said. "They don't have the tools they need to properly diagnose the patients, yet that is what is expected of them."

Dentists are in the business of helping people, and as access-to-care issues become greater, the need to properly diagnose remotely will be even more necessary. Using the Nomad, along with a sensor and laptop computer, makes community-based dental care easier and safer and also offers the possibility to extend dental services in other countries on humanitarian trips.
