Calif. city ranked No. 1 in dental flossing

Los Angeles was named the No. 1 city in the U.S. for flossing, with nearly 45% of survey respondents saying they floss at least once a day, according to a new survey commissioned by DenTek.

Mizzouri, an independent marketing research company, conducted the nationally representative survey in January 2013 in 20 major metropolitan areas in the U.S. to learn more about consumer views on flossing and oral care.

The survey found that the best cities for flossing are Los Angeles, Boston, Detroit, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, and Atlanta. The worst cities for flossing are Cleveland, Seattle/Tacoma, Dallas/Ft. Worth, San Francisco/San Jose, and Chicago.

About 35% of those questioned floss frequently, while those who don't floss (27%) said they just didn't think about it.

Here are some additional survey findings:

  • 1 in 10 respondents reported never flossing.
  • 75% reported flossing in their home bathroom, but 11% said they floss anywhere.

Why do people floss?

  • 37%: Overall health
  • 25%: Recommended by dentist/hygienist
  • 19%: To protect dental investments
