An alumnus of the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, Michael Wright, DDS, has licensed "smart" mouthguard technology from the institution for his startup company, the WrightGuard Innovation.

The smart mouthguard has physiological tracking capabilities that provide real-time monitoring for biometrics such as force of impact, pH and hydration levels, and body temperature, according to the university. The technology was developed by dental school faculty member Radi Masri, DDS, PhD, along with Dr. Wright and James Whitney II, PhD, of Amalfi Acoustics.

Wright said he plans to commercialize the technology into an athletic mouthguard that captures and processes the biometric data, offering real-time protection and potentially enhanced athletic performance to both professional and amateur athletes.
