Dentsply Sirona said it is releasing a dental filling material called Surefil one that has the convenience of a glass ionomer with the durability of a composite. It will be available starting October 12.

For patients who want amalgam-free restorations, Surefil one offers an alternative; it represents an entirely new material class and is the first ever self-adhesive composite hybrid, according to the company.

In chewing simulations, after 500,000 cycles, the material showed no evidence of fractures or damage, Dentsply Sirona reported. In comparison, the glass ionomers tested partially showed fractures after fewer than 100,000 chewing cycles.

Surefil one has an unlimited depth of cure, but it can also be light cured; restorations can be finished and polished immediately after surface light curing, the company said. The material also allows dentists to fill a cavity in just one layer, without etching or bonding, which minimizes procedure time.

Surefil one is part of Dentsply Sirona's Class II Total Practice Solution for challenging class II situations. The material is available in five shades: bleach white, A1, A2, A3, and A3.5.
