This spring, Cleveland-based MetroHealth System will launch a new paid dental assistant apprentice program to educate and train potential dental assistants. The goal of the program is to place new dental assistants in one of the system's dental offices.

The program will have up to 12 available slots, MetroHealth said. Trainees will rotate through several general dentistry and oral surgery clinics and will be paid MetroHealth's minimum wage with full-time hours while training. Trainees will also have the option to enroll in the health system's benefits programs.

The apprentice program is open to current MetroHealth employees and community members. Candidates can apply online. The application deadline for the first cohort is March 31.

MetroHealth operates four hospitals, four emergency departments, and more than 20 health centers and 40 additional sites throughout Ohio's Cuyahoga County. The system serves more than 300,000 patients, two-thirds of whom are uninsured or covered by Medicare or Medicaid.
