A researcher from the New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry has received a $2.2 million, five-year grant from one of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) for research on oral cancer progression and pain.

Yi Ye, PhD, an assistant professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, will use the funding to further study Schwann cells, a type of cell that supports neurons in the peripheral nervous system. She believes that cancer cells may activate these cells, leading to an environment that promotes cancer growth.
