Maine dentists cry foul at state board meeting

Dentists testifying May 27 before the Maine Regulatory Fairness Board said they have been unfairly disciplined by the Maine Board of Dental Examiners following what they claim are false accusations made by patients, according to a story by TV station WCSH6.

Kristin Norlander told the board that her world "fell apart" when the dental board revoked her license in 2002, WCSH reported. Norlander was investigated for psychiatric problems and abandoning a patient, but she told the fairness board the allegations were unfounded.

"Without due process and without checks and balances on the licensing board, the licensees are unlikely to have a fair hearing," Norlander told WCSH. "People who bring false allegations face no penalty -- neither do board members."

A bill held over for next year's legislative session would place the authority of deciding an accused dentist's fate in the hands of an administrative law judge, according to WCSH.
