Wis. Senate OKs bond to expand dental clinic

Wisconsin lawmakers have passed a bond that will give Marshfield Clinic $10 million to fund construction of a nonprofit dental school and expand the clinic's dental education outreach program, according to news reports.

If the bill becomes law, the state would bond up to $10 million for the project, provided the clinic raises another $10 million in private donations. The state building commission would need to approve the project by July 2015.

The state Senate passed the bill April 14 despite opposition from Republican lawmakers who call it a pork project that the state cannot currently afford, according to the Daily Reporter. But supporters argue the dental school is needed to increase access to dental care for residents of northern Wisconsin.

The bill now goes before the state Assembly.
