The merger between pharmacy giant CVS and insurer Aetna has been upheld by a U.S. district judge.

The merger involved a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice requiring CVS to sell Aetna's Medicare prescription-drug business to WellCare Health Plans. The settlement was under investigation on the grounds that the merger may harm consumers. However, the merger and settlement were "within the reaches" of the public interest, wrote Judge Richard Leon of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in a September 4 ruling.

CVS stated that the ruling confirmed the merger.

"CVS Health and Aetna have been one company since November 2018, and today's action by the district court makes that 100% clear," the company stated.
