A former administrative assistant is accused of stealing more than $30,000 in insurance reimbursement checks over an approximately yearlong period from the Massachusetts practice where she worked, according to a story published on July 28 on Brookline News.
Emilia Fertykowska, 44, of Quincy, MA, was charged with forgery; uttering a forged instrument; and identity fraud, larceny, and larceny by embezzlement. Fertykowska allegedly stole from her employer, Robert S. Hutner DMD, in Brookline, MA. Fertykowska pleaded not guilty to the charges during her arraignment on July 27.
Authorities began investigating Fertykowska after Hutner noticed discrepancies between the practice’s financial records and its year-end tax returns. The dentist hired a certified fraud examiner who concluded that Fertykowska had reportedly fraudulently endorsed and deposited 183 reimbursement checks into her personal bank account, according to the story.
While working at the practice between May 2024 and January 2026, Fertykowska allegedly forged Hutner’s signature on the checks and then deposited them into her account. She allegedly took $30,394 from the dental practice.
Furthermore, police discovered that Fertykowska allegedly manipulated records in the practice’s computer management system to cover up the thefts, per the story.
Also, a search of Fertykowska’s bank records purportedly corroborated the allegations plus investigators discovered four additional reimbursement checks that were not identified in the initial forensic audit, according to Brookline News.
A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
