A former professor accused of making her students conduct experiments and write a research paper to help her daughter get admitted into a South Korean dental school was sentenced, according to multiple recently published news stories.
The 67-year-old professor at Sungkyunkwan University's School of Pharmacy in South Korea, who was only referred to by her surname Lee, was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison. In June 2019, the professor, who was convicted of obstruction of business, was dismissed from the university, the news stories reported.
Her daughter, who also was only identified as Lee, was sentenced to a suspended 10-month prison term. Also, Seoul National University's School of Dentistry in South Korea revoked the daughter’s admission, according to the stories.
From 2016 to 2017, the professor reportedly instructed her pharmacy school students to conduct animal experiments for her daughter's college research project and write a paper based on the results. Also, the professor was accused of having her students manipulate some data to better support her daughter’s hypothesis, according to the stories.
The research and paper helped her daughter get admitted to Seoul National University's dental school in 2018. Furthermore, the professor’s daughter was listed as the paper’s co-author. However, she only observed a few of the animal experiments.
Additionally, the girl received an award for the research, and the paper was published in an internationally recognized journal, according to the stories.
