A dentist in Virginia has been suspended for two years for allegedly having nonconsensual sexual conduct with two patients at his practice while they were under the influence of either alcohol or medication, according to state dental board records.
Dr. John Alachnowicz, of Modern Day Dentistry in Dumfries, VA, must participate in an administrative hearing to have his license reinstated, according to a Virginia Board of Dentistry order dated October 7.
In June, the state dental board issued a summary suspension against Alachnowicz after concluding that he posed a substantial danger to public health or safety.
In November 2025, a female patient went to Alachnowicz’s practice for a tooth restoration. During the appointment, Alachnowicz allegedly locked the doors, turned off the lights, and put the office phones on “night mode.”
At the end of the appointment, he allegedly plied the woman, who had been a patient since 2014, with alcohol and then engaged in nonconsensual sexual conduct, including groping and penetration, according to state records.
Alachnowicz’s girlfriend, who also worked at the practice, confronted him about the conduct and threatened to report him. The girlfriend recorded their conversation during which Alachnowicz purportedly acknowledged that her reporting the incident could cost him his license and send him to jail.
In January 2026, his girlfriend told an investigator that Alachnowicz allegedly had unprotected sex in the practice with a man he met on an online dating app. Worried about her health, the girlfriend allegedly told Alachnowicz never to touch her again, according to the state.
Despite what she said, in October 2023, Alachnowicz allegedly engaged in nonsexual conduct with his girlfriend during a dental procedure while she was under the influence of Ativan and nitrous oxide. The girlfriend reported to the investigator that she discovered a video that Alachnowicz took of the assault. When she confronted him about the incident, Alachnowicz admitted it, according to state records.
During their recorded conversation, Alachnowicz admitted to multiple “nitrous episodes” while engaging in sexual contact without a "legitimate dental purpose." Additionally, it was revealed that he allegedly improperly prescribed her Ativan.
Also, the girlfriend told the investigator that Alachnowicz allegedly admitted to self-administering nitrous oxide at the practice for his own sexual gratification, according to state records.
