Septodont North America has launched Flavalta, the first lidocaine formulation with flavoring agents, marking the company's most significant local anesthetic innovation in more than 25 years, according to a press release from Septodont.
Flavalta is lidocaine hydrochloride 2% with epinephrine 1:100,000 -- the same trusted formula that dental professionals have relied on since lidocaine became the gold standard in 1948.
The difference is two added ingredients: sodium saccharin, a nonnutritive sweetener, and L-serine, a naturally occurring amino acid with flavor-enhancing properties. Both are approved for use in food, beverages, and pharmaceutical products by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The formula maintains the clinical performance characteristics clinicians expect. Infiltration anesthesia onset averages less than two minutes, while nerve block anesthesia onset averages two to four minutes. The duration is approximately 60 minutes for infiltration procedures and approximately 90 minutes of pulpal anesthesia for nerve block procedures. The cartridges are methylparaben-free, latex-free, and terminally sterilized, Septodont said.
