Does chewing xylitol gum help reduce caries in kids?

Compared with not chewing gum, the evidence shows xylitol gum is effective at reducing caries, according to a literature review presented at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry 2012 Research Day. But it's not clear whether it's due to the xylitol itself or the salivary production from gum chewing.
