CAD/CAM Insider: What's on my chair for posterior CAD/CAM restorations

Dear CAD/CAM Insider,

Chances are, you don't get to see how the dentist next door practices. That's why we created What's on My Chair, a new series in which dentists share the techniques and tools they use for modern dental procedures.

In the first episode, Dr. Steven Gold takes us behind the scenes to show how he prepares and places posterior CAD/CAM restorations at Western University of Health Sciences. The episode doesn't go live for everyone until next week, but you can watch a special sneak preview through our Insider Exclusive.

If that's not enough, Gold also spoke to DrBicuspid.com about using CAD/CAM technologies for placing conservative restorations. His experience has led him to firmly believe that tooth preparation is the foundation for the long-term success of conservative CAD/CAM restorations -- and that using CAD/CAM technology is more fun than conventional dentistry.

In other CAD/CAM Community news, digital manufacturing techniques excelled in a recent systematic review. Researchers found complete dentures manufactured with CAD/CAM technology had better retention and tissue surface adaptation. What's more, digitally created dentures cost less time and money to produce and left patients more satisfied with the outcome.

There are two new intraoral scanners on the market you should know about. Carestream Dental launched the CS 3800 wireless intraoral scanner, which is designed for orthodontics, prosthetics, and surgical guides. Meanwhile, Medit debuted the i700 intraoral scanner, the lighter, faster sequel to its i500 intraoral scanner. Medit gave us a "hands on" preview of the i700 in a Technology Focus video interview.

During the interview, the Medit team presented data showing a huge spike in the use of digital dentistry since the start of 2020. Was the pandemic the catalyst you needed to adopt CAD/CAM in your practice? If so, I'd love to hear from you. Contact me to share how the pandemic has changed your use of digital dentistry.
