You probably have a smooth process for referring patients to specialists. However, is it as effective and efficient as it should be?

Do

Make the referral process easier for the patient. In many cases, patients are either unclear on the next steps or delay treatment long enough to have complications. Make the next appointment for patients while they are still in the office so there is no question about whom they are to see and when.

Don't

Don't lose track of patients. The general dentist's practice should be involved in the case and monitor each step of the process. It is critical that you receive clinical letters/emails from the specialist so you are updated regarding the patient's progress. General practices should track patients as they move through the interdisciplinary care process.
