W.Va. university creates dental residency program

The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) approved a new dental residency program at Marshall University in West Virginia that will launch on July 1.

The program will be based out of the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine in Huntington, WV, and is sponsored by Cabell Huntington Hospital, according the university.

"Approval of a dental residency and creation of a new department for the school of medicine is a pivotal step in our continued growth," stated Joseph I. Shapiro, MD, dean of the medical school, in a press release. "This residency ... allows us to bring academically strong dental care to our region, an area historically plagued with oral health disparities."

Raj K. Khanna, DMD, MD, professor of surgery at the school, will lead the dental residency program. To accommodate the program, the Fairfield Building in Huntington underwent a renovation estimated at $1.5 million, according to the university.
