Wis. launches 1st dental assistant apprentice program

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) has launched the state’s first dental assistant registered apprenticeship program.

The 15-month program, which is designed to address healthcare workforce shortages, combines 592 hours of paid classroom instruction and 2,008 hours of on-the-job training. Apprentices will gain experience assisting with dental procedures, maintaining records, preparing equipment, and supporting patient care, according to the DWD.

Two apprentices have signed on and will take courses through program partner Chippewa Valley Technical College-Eau Claire campus.

The program is supported by a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services’ Oral Health Workforce Pathway Program.
