Do’s and don’ts for building a long-term team

The world of dental staffing is changing. The shortage is unlikely to improve for five to 10 years. A new leadership model for staffing needs to be put in place. Building a culture of positivity, high energy, leadership, and transparency are three key elements that need to be in place to retain team members and build a long-term team.

Be a “team builder.” Dentists and office managers need to view their role as that of a team builder. One of the best ways to start building a great team is to identify three immediate leadership changes you can make. These can be simple and include concepts such as the doctor and office manager displaying positive attitudes every day, interacting in fun ways with the team, and taking an interest in their personal lives.

Don’t forget to compliment every team member. Each day, find at least one team member to recognize in front of other team members for a job well done, and thank all team members for their work. Letting the team know how much they are appreciated each day goes a long way to maintaining a long-term team.
