Biomarkers show promise for pulpitis diagnosis

The use of pulpal biomarkers may be instrumental in developing a more accurate and biologically based diagnostic tool in endodontics, according to a new study on the presence of these biomarkers in pulpitis. However, before that can happen, biomarkers that reliably correlate with pulpal inflammation must be identified, and sample collection and analysis must be improved, the authors noted.

ADA vote allows specialists to practice outside specialty

Specialists will be able to practice outside their announced specialty, according to a resolution approved by the ADA House of Delegates during the 2016 annual meeting. The change was expected after a U.S. judge ruled earlier in 2016 that a Texas regulation barring dentists from advertising themselves as "specialists" was unconstitutional.

Can CBCT help reduce root canal surprises?

Surprises in endodontic treatments, such as additional canals on an incisor, can disrupt the best-laid treatment plans. As more than 40% of root canal treatments need retreatment because of missed roots or canals, researchers from France wanted to determine if cone-beam CT (CBCT) could determine the number of additional canals and also if one tooth's root canal anatomy was predictive of another's in the same patient.
