Cellerant CEO series: The entrepreneur behind H2Ocean on building a natural product category from scratch

What do marine biology, the tattoo industry, and dental health have in common? For Eddie Kolos, founder of H2Ocean, they are all chapters in a single entrepreneurial story that began with a fascination with ocean chemistry and led to one of the more unusual origin stories in oral care.

In this episode of The DrBicuspid.com podcast -- part of the ongoing Cellerant CEO series -- Editor-in-Chief Kevin Henry sits down with Kolos to talk about how H2Ocean came to be, what he learned breaking into the dental market, and what keeps him going after more than 25 years of building the brand.

H2Ocean's core premise is deceptively simple: Use sea salt-based, naturally derived ingredients to create products that support the body's own healing processes rather than disrupting them. Kolos holds a patent covering ocean-based and plant-based formulations and was among the first to bring xylitol and lysozyme -- an enzyme naturally present in human saliva -- into mainstream oral care products. At the time, he says, most dentists had never heard of either ingredient.

Getting those ideas taken seriously in the dental world was harder than he expected. The industry's big trade shows were dominated by well-funded legacy brands, and clinicians trained on established protocols were slow to consider alternatives. Kolos is candid about the resistance he encountered and the patience it required. "A dentist goes to school to learn what they've learned in their books, and they don't want to really change their mindset until it's really proven," Kolos said. "It takes a lot longer to get them to change."

The conversation also delves into Kolos' entrepreneurial philosophy -- a work ethic he traces back to starting his first business at 14, a stubborn belief in fewer and cleaner ingredients at a time when that wasn't a selling point, and a willingness to keep going when the path is unclear. Kolos describes building H2Ocean's own manufacturing facility as the brand's next major step, in part to maintain quality control that third-party manufacturers can't always guarantee.

Today H2Ocean offers more than 45 products. The healing rinse line, including the Arctic Ocean mint and lemon varieties, is available on Amazon and at oralcare.h2ocean.com.
