Is reducing operatory noise the next big lever for patient care, staff retention?

Dentists have talked for years about hearing damage from the operatory's constant whir and clatter. Peman Montazemi, a medical device executive with 25 years in the acoustics space, and Dr. Sam Shamardi, a periodontist and chief dental officer, think that conversation has missed a bigger point: The noise isn't just a hearing hazard; it's a source of constant friction that slows clinicians down all day long.

The conversation also covers how the platform handles regulatory and security concerns. Montazemi walks through the company's approach to HIPAA compliance through business associate agreements, double encryption for data in transit and at rest, and multifactor authentication, along with its strategy of partnering with established voice AI companies rather than building that layer itself, positioning Finally Quiet as the acoustic front end that feeds into existing practice management software integrations.

Perhaps the most striking part of the conversation is what's coming next: a patient-facing headphone system currently in development, paired with an upcoming U.S. National Institutes of Health-backed study on cadaver heads, aimed at reducing not just ambient sound but bone-conducted vibration from drilling. This development, Shamardi says, could fundamentally change what a "quiet" dental visit feels like for anxious patients while still allowing clinicians to communicate instructions to patients through the headphones when needed.

Shamardi and Montazemi also touch on why solving for operatory friction may matter even more now, as post-COVID staff turnover has left many practices leaning on newer, less experienced team members.
