Dental practices get extra year for digital accessibility

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights extended the Section 504 digital accessibility compliance deadline to May 11, 2027. The extension gives dental practices additional time to bring websites, patient portals, and online forms into compliance with federal accessibility standards.

The rule applies to dental entities that receive federal financial assistance, including Medicaid providers, dental schools, and community health centers with 15 or more employees. Covered practices must ensure digital tools -- from screen-reader-compatible websites to accessible online billing systems -- meet requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

The ADA offers a digital accessibility guide to help practices audit and update patient-facing digital tools before the deadline.
